Mr. John Bailes
To err is human, to forgive divine ~ Alexander Pope
British poet Alexander Pope reminds us that when we make mistakes, it is forgiveness that expresses God's love. My interactions with students have taught me that respect and patience are crucial to a good education. With a willingness to learn and to overcome mistakes, any student can achieve mastery of a new skill or concept.
I am delighted to be teaching at Cardinal Newman this year (2018-19). I will be teaching 10th Grade Honors English and College English 101. I have been teaching English for three decades at both high school and college levels in California and South Carolina. Since coming to Columbia, I have been at the University of South Carolina, working on a PhD in English Composition and Rhetoric. As an instructor while at USC, I taught Composition 101, 102, Capstone Themed English, and Honors English. In 2016, I was recipient of USC's Cile Moise Excellence in Teaching Award in the English Department. For the past decade, I have been an AP English exam reader for the College Board. I am also a poet and have privately published Feather the Oar, which was reviewed by the Yale Younger Poets.
